Christine Bowman, Chair of the Colleges That Change Lives Board of Directors, announced today that Ms. Ann Marano has accepted the role of Executive Director of Colleges That Change Lives and will begin her role on June 15, 2021. In this role, Marano will report directly to the CTCL Board of Directors and will serve as the face of the consortium as well as a spokesperson for the value of a student-centered college search process. Ms. Marano will also serve in a pivotal role, as CTCL looks to its mission and its vision while preparing to celebrate its 25th anniversary.
“I am pleased to share that Ann Marano has accepted the role of Executive Director of CTCL,” Board Chair-elect and chair of the search committee, Crys Latham, said. “We are so impressed by Ann’s enthusiasm and passion for helping students and families in the college search process, and she will bring great energy to the CTCL organization as we continue to think deeply and innovatively about how to support and serve our member institutions and the families who consider them for their college choice.”
Before stepping into this role, Ms. Marano served as a College Bound Advisor for 12 years for the Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School in Dallas, TX. It is for her work there that Ann earned the distinction of being selected as a Counselors That Change Lives Award recipient in 2017. Prior to her work at Rangel, Marano worked in admissions at California State Polytechnic University Pomona and California State University East Bay. Ms. Marano earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Sociology from Mount St. Mary’s University in California followed by a Master of Arts in Education-Psychology from Pepperdine University.

The Colleges That Change Lives, Inc. (CTCL) story began in 1996 when a book by the same name — Colleges That Change Lives — was published by retired New York Times education editor and journalist, Loren Pope. As a result, many of the colleges featured in the book began working together to further promote this philosophy of a student-centered college search. In 1998, the CTCL organization was formally organized as a non-profit, independent of Pope and with his blessing. Today, CTCL is regarded as a leading advocate on the subject of higher education access and college choice. CTCL has been led since June 2013 by Maria Furtado, who served as the third executive director of the organization.
