Worcester, MA - The Colleges of Worcester Consortium, Inc. is accepting nominations for its 2009 George I. Alden Higher Education Access Award,
which recognizes an individual or organization that has shown
exceptional commitment to the cause of educational opportunity,
promoting and supporting the concept of access to higher education for
all. The deadline for nominations is February 13.
This award, which carries a $5,000 prize, is
given annually to a Central Massachusetts based individual or
organization which has: committed time and resources to create and
support services that open the doors to higher education for a
nontraditional population; worked to create and implement coalitions to
more effectively and efficiently utilize resources to increase the
impact of access services; and has advocated on behalf of disadvantaged
or underrepresented students at the middle, secondary, or postsecondary
level to increase access to and retention in higher education programs. In 2009, the Consortium celebrates its 35th year of committment to postsecondary access services.
The award will be presented at the Consortium's annual Alden Awards dinner, "A Celebration of Higher Education in Central Massachusetts," on April 6 at Mechanics Hall. The event will also include the presentation of the George I. Alden Higher Education Excellence Award, chosen from nominations submitted by the president's offices at Consortium member institutions.
