Release Date:
March 26, 2008

Worcester, MA - U.S. Rep. James P. McGovern (D-Worcester) recently made a stop at South High Community School to speak to approximately 300 seniors about accessing higher education.

McGovern spoke to the students about current national legislation underway in Washington D.C., including the College Cost Reduction Act of 2007, which will provide the single largest investment in higher education since the G.I. Bill. The legislation will make college more affordable, increase the purchasing power of the Pell Grant Scholarship, ensure a highly qualified teacher in every classroom, encourage and award public service and encourage philanthropic participation in college retention and financing.

Rubby Wuabu and Joseph Ha, both students involved with the Educational Talent Search program, played a significant role in the festivities. Wuabu spoke to her classmates about the importance of performing community service and Ha had the honor of introducing the congressman.

After addressing the students, McGovern fielded several of their questions which touched on financial aid programs, global warming and the upcoming presidential election.
