GEAR UP students gather in Worcester for leadership conference

Focus on "Setting and Achieving Goals"

Worcester, MA - Approximately 55 middle and high school students from across the Commonwealth particpated in the GEAR UP Massachusetts Student Leadership Conference, "Setting & Achieving Goals," from July 28-30 at Worcester State College.

Students who serve as GEAR UP ambassadors at their schools engaged in activities designed to foster the development of leadership skills. Schools represented were: South Lawrence East Middle School (Lawrence, MA); Pyne Arts Middle School, Lowell High School (Lowell, MA); Duggan Middle School, The Springfield Renaissance School (Springfield, MA) and Worcester East Middle School (Worcester, MA).

The conference provided numerous group activities focused on communication and team building skills. These activities are designed to prepare students for college and for lifelong learning. Students met with representatives from their school to learn, share and plan activities related to the importance of going to college.

GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) at Worcester East Middle School and North High School is a federally funded project of the Colleges of Worcester Consortium, Inc. and the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education. The program fosters school-wide changes that promote and increase college awareness and readiness. Services include early college/career awareness group activities, individual postsecondary advising, and parent outreach activities.
