Release Date:
November 16, 2007

Eric SchultzWorcester, MA - The Colleges of Worcester Consortium Career Services Committee and Fallon Community Health Plan (FCHP) held a professional development day concerning health and wellness careers on Friday, November 16 at the FCHP corporate offices.

The event featured presentations on healthcare reform, improving retention with better hiring practices, graduate school and careers in the biomedical sciences, career opportunities in state public health practice and trends in physical therapy and behavioral healthcare. Approximately 30 career services professionals from both within and outside the Consortium took part in the event.

Eric Schultz, president and CEO of FCHP, gave a morning keynote presentation entitled “The Impact of Healthcare Reform on Employers.” He provided background information on the FCHP organization and discussed the new law that was recently passed which requires all state residents in Massachusetts to have health insurance by December 31, 2007. Of particular interest to administrators that work closely with college students in the 19-26 age bracket, Schultz (pictured at right) also spoke about how the age of FCHP member dependents has been increased to persons who are under age 26 or for two years following the loss of dependent status (based on IRS standards), whichever comes first.

"Career advisors who are working with the millennial generation as they move out of dependence on their parents and college, and into their own careers, are often asked related questions about making that life transition; questions about health insurance are not uncommon," said Eric Saczawa, career services committee chair and assistant director of career services/coordinator of internships and employer relations at Clark University. "Mr. Schultz provided valuable information on healthcare reform for us to pass on to our students."

Rounding out the morning session was a human resources presentation entitled “Hire Right the First Time: Improving Retention with Better Hiring Practices” by Linda St. John and Ermis Amparo of the FCHP human resources division.

Six late morning and afternoon breakout sessions were also presented by professionals from the University of Massachusetts Medical School; the American Cancer Society; the Connecticut Department of Health; the Massachusetts Department of Health; Fallon Clinic; Global Health through Training, Education and Service; and Community Healthlink, Inc.
