In his 15-year umpiring career, Worcester native Steve Palermo was on the field for a no-hitter, an All-Star Game, a World Series, and the infamous Bucky Dent homerun during the one-game AL East playoff between the Red Sox and Yankees in 1978.
He was a nationally recognized umpire and considered one of the best in the game before a gunshot wound to the spinal cord left him paralyzed from the waist down in 1992. Just a year after doctors told him he would likely never walk again, Palermo was up on his feet, walking and rehabilitating in an effort to get back on the field.
Currently the supervisor of umpires for Major League Baseball and a special assistant to MLB Commisioner Bud Selig, Palermo travels across the country to share his story of overcoming adversity.
