The agencies listed here have requested Gerontology Student Interns for the upcoming academic year. They are listed in alphabetical order by agency name. The intern job descriptions are updated annually and reflect the current needs and activities of the agencies/institutions.

Students should make their inquiries with the agencies through the designated contact person listed for that organization. In addition, many of the agencies are flexible and will tailor their internships to your specific interests and talents.

All students taking an internship for academic credit in the gerontology certificate program must complete an Internship Registration Form (due in the CGSP office no later than one month after the semester begins).

The Auburn Council on Aging is a department of the Town of Auburn, which focuses on policy, advocacy, and education of elders within the town. This department acts as a referral source for elder affairs and coordinates elder services for town residents. Information and referral, counseling, transportation, congregate meal site and meals on wheels, educational and recreational programming are some of the services provided by the COA. More than 1,300 seniors utilize the facility on Goddard Drive, and an additional 2,200 are contacted by the Outreach Team.

The Internship Positions are as follows:

Interns will experience a broad overview of all aspects of how a senior center functions, working with the Executive Director of Elder Affairs and/or the Outreach Coordinator. Interns, working with the COA and staff will develop an in-depth project, beneficial to both parties. Although this project can focus on any aspect of services and activities in a senior center, current needs include:

Briarwood is a non-profit Continuing Care Retirement Community offering Independent Living in cottages and apartments, Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing Care. Located on 50 beautifully wooded acres on the outskirts of Worcester, the Briarwood Community is easily accessible by car and is on a city bus line. The community consists of 95 cottages and 46 apartments for elders living independently, 29 assisted living apartments and an 82 bed skilled nursing center. Completing the campus is a new Community Center which houses both the administrative offices and beautiful common facilities for residents, including a 200 seat auditorium

Our Commitment to the Student Internship Program: A member of the Briarwood staff will be assigned as your manager. You will have regular meetings and we will work with you to make sure this is a positive learning experience for you. You may decide to work with a particular department or you may want experience in the entire community from Independent to Assisted Living to Nursing Home.

The Internship Description:

Briarwood Continuing Care Retirement Community offers an opportunity for students to work with elders with varying levels of abilities and independence. Residents live in cottages, apartments, or Assisted Living apartments, or at our Knollwood Nursing Center. There is programming for residents at all levels. Interns can assist staff in providing scheduled activities and programs for independent and Assisted Living level residents. There are also opportunities for 1:1 contact with residents -- e.g., teaching basic computer skills to residents.

Internship hours would be possible within the following times:

Tuesday: noon - 4 p.m.

Friday: 9 a.m. to noon (could possibly be extended into afternoons)

Saturday: 1 - 4 p.m.

Central Massachusetts Agency on Aging is a federally funded Area Agency on Aging,
(AAA), serving seniors (people 60 years of age and over) and their caregivers.
We plan, fund and monitor over $2.5 million in federal funds throughout our sixty-one (61) community service area. SeniorConnection provides information to help seniors and caregivers to help themselves. We offer seniors, caregivers and professionals guidance through the
Central Massachusetts aging network maze. This is accomplished through the provision of extensive aging network Information and Referral (I&R) services as well as the interactive support services located on our website: www.SeniorConnection.org and its subsite Connection for Caregivers.

The Internship Positions are as follows:

SeniorConnection-Information and Referral Associate:
1. Help consumers to identify their individual need(s). Research and present appropriate available community resource(s) to meet said need(s).
2. Update existing and organize new resources on www.SeniorConnection.org, Connection for Caregivers and in the CMAA Resource Lending Library.
3. Research Internet resources and gather information pertinent to Central Massachusetts seniors and their caregivers.
4. Raise community awareness of SeniorConnection by distributing educational materials throughout the 61 town/city service area.

Program Research and Evaluation Associate:

Research projects can be customized to student interests and might include:

Needs assessment surveys or other data collection related to: Caregivers, specific ethnic/racial groups, grandparents raising grandchildren, housing issues, other issues related to the needs of elder sin Central Mass.

Program evaluation projects might include: financial managements programs, support group programs, home repair programs.

In addition, we have needs assessment survey results from 1993, 1997, and 2001 (part of a statewide survey) that might be used for comparison purposes by students.

Administration and Planning Associate:
1. Under the direction of supervisor, identify policy issues that affect seniors within the
planning and service area.
2. Analyze issues, prepare reports for Board of Directors and that may be used in communications with legislators at State and Federal levels.
3. Network with other agencies in the aging network, particularly Councils on Aging and
Senior Centers, Aging Services Access Points, Executive Office of Elder Affairs (Boston) and other providers for the purpose of assisting in development and coordination of services offered to seniors.

The Consortium Gerontology Studies Program (CGSP) is a cooperative academic program of four colleges: Assumption, Clark, Holy Cross, and Worcester State. The program of the Colleges of Worcester Consortium, Inc. is located at the consortium offices in downtown Worcester. Over 100 students from the participating colleges are enrolled. The CGSP office is responsible for co-curricular programming, academic and career advising, student recruitment, and program administration. The CGSP office also has editorial responsibilities for a peer-reviewed, academic journal, which is published quarterly.

The Internship Positions are as follows:

¨ Program Administration & Event Coordination - The student intern would work closely with the Director in all aspects of program administration. The student intern would select at least one project, which they could see through, from start to finish.

· Academic Journal Management - The student intern would work closely with the managing editor in coordinating the journal with authors, editorial board, editors, and publisher.

Community Outreach and Education - The student intern would have the opportunity to work alongside the Director but also work independently after developing a working plan to increase the visibility of the CGSP and member institutions, and to increase community partnerships, collaboration, and student involvement. The intern for this position would have the opportunity to design their own community outreach and education plan that would highlight issues related to aging, gerontology education, social action, applied learning, careers in aging, etc.

Recreation Assistant Intern: The student intern will be under the supervision of the Executive Director and/or the Activity Coordinator. The student intern will help develop and implement recreational activities for the residents, assist in the coordination of events and activities and help develop new activity programs.

Elder Services of Worcester Area Inc. is a private, not-for-profit corporation whose mission is to provide frail elders with in-home services that will enable them to live independently with dignity and comfort in their own homes, preventing or postponing the need for institutional care.

Elder Services’ core component is case management. Professionally qualified Case Managers asses s the needs of each client in a home visit and develop a care plan in consultation with the client and family. Case Managers assist clients in identifying, accepting and securing needed services either directly, by purchase, or by referral to other community agencies. Case Managers initiate and review service plans and monitor clients’ needs on a continuing basis. Other direct services include: Information and referral, Protective and Crisis intervention services, nutrition assistance (home delivered meals), Money Management services and Senior Companions. Purchased services include: Chore, homemaker, home health, personal care, personal emergency response services, respite care, day care and transportation services.

The Student Internship Program at Elder Services was developed as a means of providing area college students with clinical experience in working with elders in the Worcester area. Students at first receive a thorough training on issues and available resources for elders in the area. Students also learn case management skills such as assessments and narrative writing skills. In some cases, students are afforded the opportunity to actually conduct assessments with clients of Elder Services under supervision of a Case Manager and the Student Intern Training Staff. The Internship program is designed to allow the student opportunity for growth.

A car is required.

Reimbursement for mileage is available.

The Hermitage is a 101 bed skilled nursing facility. We provide skilled physical, occupational and speech therapy services, as well. The population is primarily geriatric. The majority are in need of long term care. Approximately 10-20 percent are potentially able to rehabilitate for discharge to the community. We have a 38 bed specialized Alzheimer Care unit.

The Internship Positions are as follows:

Social Worker - Assistant
Specific activities include becoming familiar with rehabilitation staff and team approach, participate in the inquiry process and pre-admission screening, compile social histories, individualized care plans, and discharge plans, participate in interdisciplinary care planning conferences, social service therapeutic groups, become familiar with referral sources, community agencies, and other specialists in geriatric and rehabilitative services.

Recreation Assistant
To assist the Recreation Director in coordination, development, and implementation of comprehensive therapeutic recreation services including facilitating group programs, documentation (one-on-one visits, daily participation), contribute to resident care planning preparation, assist with planning and leadership of special events,. To assist the Recreation Director in providing opportunities for each resident to meet their social, physical, cognitive, and emotional needs and interest through group or independent participation.

Jewish Family Service is a full family service agency serving a wide variety of individuals and families of all ages. Our services to elders include assessment, case management, counseling, support services to families and caregivers and guardianship/conservatorship services. The latter is a major program where the agency serves as the court-appointed responsible party for 100 incapacitated elders over the age of sixty (60).

The Internship Positions are follows:

Guardianship Case Manager (One year commitment and a car required)
Develop appropriate case plans in consultation with supervising social worker, referral sources, clients and families where appropriate. Provide direct and ancillary services to clients, including regular visits, personal needs shopping and primary approval of bills. Take managerial responsibility for changes in clients' living arrangements. Act as liaison with caregiving personnel to monitor clients' conditions and care, and to determine needs. Intern will carry at most three to five (3-5) cases and will participate in assessments. May also visit other clients who need more interaction. Mileage allowance provided. Will attend care plan meetings at nursing homes, monitor medications in nursing homes, especially clients with Rogers – attend funerals and help in planning them. Will attend court, when possible, with supervisor. Confidentiality will be stressed at all times. Must be flexible, as emergencies arise daily. Some clerical, dealing with their calls i.e. Mass. Health redetermination, letter responses.

For over eighty (80) years, the J. H.C. has been a major provider of health care services. A private, not-for-profit Health Care Center, the J.H.C. is licensed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a long term care facility, skilled rehabilitation unit, and an Alzheimer's unit. Currently, the J.H.C. provides skilled long-term care and transitional care to one hundred forty-one (141) residents within a protective environment which includes a full range of nursing, therapeutic and rehabilitative services.

Offering varying levels of care, including a Transitional Care Unit (Rehab), the facility's services include: nursing, social service, nutrition, physical therapy, occupational therapy, recreational activities and volunteer services. The J.H.C. is also an internship site for area colleges and universities.

Life Care Center of Auburn is a geriatric long-term care facility with sub-acute and rehabilitation components.

The Internship Positions are as follows:

Diversional Therapeutic Activity Program
Interns receive direct experience with varied diagnoses and therapeutic activities in a geriatric setting.

Duties Consist of:

· Assist Residents in the Ice Cream and Gift Shoppe with “service work” which is designed to provide the Resident with a sense of self-esteem and purpose.
· Conduct “current events” programs with higher functioning sub-acute Residents in a small group setting designed to promote interest in the community and foster their return back to their homes and families.
· Assist with wheelchair exercise groups and assist with one to one sensory motor activities (winding yarn, painting, pasting, etc.) with lower functioning Residents. These activities are designed to promote interactions with the Residents surroundings by engaging them in “failure free” pursuits.
· Play board games with Residents (Scrabble, Checkers, Backgammon, Chess). These games provide the Residents with opportunities for increased cognitive functioning and also friendly competition.

Massachusetts Senior Action Council is a non-profit organization dedicated to advocating for social and economic justice for seniors. This office is known as the Central Mass. Chapter of the Senior Action Council and is one of ten chapters in the Commonwealth. The chapter is located in the Worcester Senior Center building and works collaterally and in conjunction with various advocacy groups such as Neighbor to Neighbor, Center for Living and Working, MASSCARE and others on common issues such as affordable healthcare and prescription drugs affecting their constituents. This is a hands-on organizing position for students interested in community organization, social justice, advocacy, and grass roots efforts.

The internship is as follows:

Intern Organizer—the student would work alongside other staff and would have the opportunity to do many of the following:

Direct outreach and membership recruitment with seniors in public housing, retiree groups, clubs, etc. in coordination with MSAC leaders

Leadership development including identification of potential leaders, training and support of individuals and work with action-oriented committee of members

Action research, development of strategy, group work and other support of organizing by members on healthcare, housing and other issues

Fundraising activities

Network with other senior advocacy and social justice organizations as well as other MCAS chapters

Outreach and community education

The Millbury Congregate Housing Program provides a residential shared living environment to frail or isolated elders and the disabled. It provides an alternative to nursing home placement for elders who desire additional support and seek companionship. Congregate Housing is designed to provide affordable housing, together with the supporting social and health services needed to help individuals maintain independent living.

Interns can also design their own internships under the guidance and supervision of the Congregate Housing Coordinator.

Internships could also be combined with the Adult Day Health Center located in the same building.

Social Service for Congregate Housing
Assessment of supportive needs of tenants and applicants; offer support and counsel to tenants; recruit volunteers, conduct apartment meetings, perform monthly progress notes, conduct day-to-day operations of program.

The Shrewsbury Council on Aging (SCOA) is a human service department of the town which serves the needs and issues of Shrewsbury’s seniors, age 60 and over, or families with senior issues.
The Council on Aging offers a range of programs, services, and activities, some of which are described below. The department is located in a new Senior Center, which opened in 2000. The department works closely with other agencies such as the Age Center in Worcester, Elder Services of Worcester, the Central Massachusetts Agency on Aging, and the Executive Office of Elder Affairs. It also works with other town departments and agencies, such as Parks and Recreation, the Health Department, Shrewsbury Community Services, Shrewsbury Public Access, and the Police Department.
Services include: Information and Referral, Transportation, Nutrition, Senior Monthly Newsletter, Outreach services, Free Medical Screenings: Podiatry, Spinal, Hearing, Blood Pressure, Free Legal and Financial Clinics, Monthly Educational talks, Volunteer Opportunities
Programs include: SHINE, Fuel Assistance, RUOK, CARES, Vial of Life, Friendly Visitors, Grand Reading, and the Watch Your Car Program.

The Internship Positions are as follows:

Interns will establish a project under the guidance of the COA board and staff. In-depth project opportunities are numerous and would prove mutually beneficial to both the intern and the COA.

Some examples of what is currently needed include:
· grant writing
· assisting in the development of the COA Board’s next five year plan
· designing resource materials for information and referral
· assisting in outreach activities to assess the supports for seniors over 80 in town
· assist in special projects involving the new senior center

The intern would choose one of these options or choose another topic of interest to them that is needed for the COA.

Summit ElderCare (SE) is an insurance, medical and social support program all in one convenient package.

Summit Eldercare is a model of care that centers around an interdisciplinary team of specialists in geriatric care. SE provides complete medical care including FULL coverage for prescription drugs and provides the help a caregiver needs to keep their loved one at home—including assistance with activities of daily living and socialization at our Adult Day Health Centers.

Summit ElderCare is a PACE program (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly), one of just 40 in the United States and is sponsored by Fallon Community Health Plan.

Internship Position:

Interns will have the opportunity to work alongside nursing, social work, or activities staff in their interactions with clients. Opportunities to do research are available.

Services are provided 7 days/week by an interdisciplinary team that includes nursing, physical, occupational and speech therapies, along with a recreation program. A specialized Alzheimer’s Unit is also available.

Whitney Place Assisted Living

Whitney Place is an assisted living facility providing 24 hour care for frail elderly and cognitively impaired residents. We are part of a campus that provides a continuum of care for the elderly, that includes independent and assisted living and nursing home placement. For our Alzheimer/cognitively impaired residents, we have initiated the Tapestry Program, which preserves self-esteem, maximizes independence and enhances the personal satisfaction of our residents.

The internship positions are as follows:

Social Work - implement Tapestry philosophy, assist with resident assessments, one-on-one interaction with residents/families, assist with resident management.

Recreation - Implement programming for residents, participate in staff meetings, one-on-one interaction with residents.

An intern will assist the Executive Office of Elder Affairs staff with various planning support to accomplish tasks.

The Internship Positions are as follows:

Planning

Assist with the monitoring of over 20 program contracts. This includes review of paperwork and accompanying statistics submitted by contractors, as well as site visits

Assist in staffing of one or more of the following committees: Health Resources, Alzheimer’s Partnership, Housing, Addiction Coalition for Elders, Budget, and Spirituality.

The City of Worcester Executive Office of Elder Affair’s opened the Worcester Senior Center, located at 128 Providence Street, in June of 2000 to thousands of well-wishers who marveled at the transformation of the renovated third of the building. Less than a month after that, programs attracted hundreds of seniors daily and many community collaborators.

The Senior Center is comprised of a beautiful lobby and library, a spacious multi-purpose room for the Age Center’s lunch program and other activities, a short-order diner operated by Quinsigamond Community College, a large activity room for fitness programs and meetings, an ample health and wellness clinic and programs coordinated by the City’s Department of Public Health, a computer lab equipped with 20 computers, a gift shop operated by The Friends of Worcester’s Senior Center, a game room complete with donated pool table, smaller rooms for classes and meetings, as well as offices for Elder Affairs and co-locators. Grants and volunteerism have also ensured attractive landscaping complete with therapeutic gardens cultivated by the Center’s Late Bloomer’s Garden Club. The Senior Center has taken off as a community resource and offers a wide range of services, programs and opportunities to individuals 55 and over, caregivers, and students.

Internship positions and areas of opportunity

In the upcoming year, opportunities will exist for CGSP students to work with and assist staff, advocates on various projects, the Center’s operations and programs. Interns will meet curriculum and personal goals through learning experiences that involve interaction with the community at large and specific segments of our diverse and elder population and by researching issues, reviewing materials, participation in public meetings, through telephone calls, personal contacts, implementing programs and planned events. Specific internship positions can include:

¨ Public Relations/Marketing
Assist Executive Office of Elder Affairs with planning and implementing a public education/marketing plan to increase awareness, understanding and
support of the Senior Center. Various PR strategies that intern can provide planning and
hands on support with could include but not be limited to: presentations to groups of seniors
and other community groups, press conferences, radio talk shows, newsletter production, meetings with service providers, public officials, the business and educational communities, and planning of various events and developing marketing materials.

¨ Fund Raising
Facilitate the fund raising process by choosing one of the following tasks: (1) research possible sources of funding and assist with grant writing; (2) assist staff and the Friends of Worcester’s Senior Center, Inc. with an ongoing, modest capital campaign for furnishings, fixtures and equipment in the senior center; (3) offer planning support to staff and the "Friends” fund raising/community and special events; (4) plan and implement programs to increase the grassroots support of the project with seniors and students through such efforts as a penny drive, restaurant dinners donation program, and a bottle/can recycle program in elder housing to benefit the senior center.

¨ Program and Services Development

Intern opportunities will exist for working with the Senior Center Program Developer in actual program and service delivery. This may include planning and development of new services, special program coordination/oversight responsibilities and/or actual direct service provision.

This internship may accommodate up to 3 students depending on scheduling and space availability.

Worcester Institute for Senior Education (WISE) is an organization created by a local group of retired citizens and Assumption College. It provides quality educational opportunities for seniors in the Worcester area. It is a member-directed learning center where peer learning and active participation are key concepts. Through the peer learning concept, members share their knowledge and experience with each other by creating, coordinating, and participating in courses.

The Internship Positions are as follows:

Program Assistant
To assist the director in development of the program including coordination of course offerings and planning of special events. The Intern will work directly with seniors who serve on the Council, Curriculum and Special Events Committees. May also assist with marketing of WISE through its newsletter and speakers bureau.
